EVERYONE COMMITS MISTAKES

             When children enter into the formal system of education, there may have been certain changes that occured in the bahavior, adjustment, mental exercise and values. These changes creates so many difficulties for children.

            Everyone makes mistakes, a mistake should be seen as related to a specific behavior and use to judge the total person. Parents should not scold the child but instead point out what needs to be improved. Make your child believe that he is empowered to learn from his mistakes.

           When your child learns to view mistakes and failures in aright way, they will no longer be afraid off. They are now ready to try new difficult things. Challenges will help them discover their capabilities and they can use these to bounce back.

“ Children make mistakes because they are children as parents and teachers we should correct them because they are making mistakes". 

          Children learn from their experiences. They grow and develop orderly, in predictable ways. Learning to move about their words, communicate and play. As their ability increases with the environment, the error will also increase .

            As parents and teachers, we should provide effective and efficient errors correction. It is important to provide feedback to children when they make errors. A pupil who is afraid to  make mistakes is stuck with his mistakes. The negative feelings make him unproductive and robs him of the time, energy and resources that could have been otherwise spent correcting the mistakes or improving the situation.

         As parent and as a teachers we should talk to our children about the imporatnce of increasing his self-acceptance. Every human being, has both strengths and weaknesses. He should accept himself, mistakes and all.

            Mistake is an instance of incorrectness or of wrong opinion or judgment. As the saying goes, “ Through mistakes we learn but do not make mistakes just to learn. Children learn and discover many things when they commit mistakes. All of us commit mistakes because we are just human and nobody is perfect

PARENTS AND TEACHERS RESPONSIBILITY

A little child does not feel much responsibility.            A task, a doubt and little children to care for are responsibilities.

These are two sentences with different meanings of the word responsibility. The same both parents and teachers have our own responsibilities with our children. Responsibility is more than providing our children with the material things they need. Responsibility means keeping your promises, even the unspoken ones.

                 Educating our children depends much on us parents and teachers. Parents have great part in molding the personality and values of their children. They must show the warmth, love, care, justice, acceptance and security among their children. The maturation of education starts at home. Education plays a vital role in culture and penetrates the life of individual as he takes possession of knowledge, skills, values imperative in human relationship.

                   The job of a teacher is very crucial and challenging because

it is he who shapes the student’s life in the best possible way. He takes a hand, opens a mind, touches a heart and shapes the future.

                   Parents should remember that teachers act as second parents, the teachers are just there to assist the children in their needs while parents play a very important role in the life of children as well as in the society to lay firm foundation for future usual citizenship.

                     Furthermore, the parents have greater part in educating their children. Guide them as they grow, show them in every wat possible that they are cared for, and make special moments for them that will add magic to their lives, motivate them to make a difference in the lives and most important, teach them to be confident, creative, appreciative and responsible.

                   Indeed our children are the hope of our fatherland, and this could only be happen through the proper guidance of parents and teachers, too.

                    Benjamin Bloom, says that “ The children grow to be smart or dumb depending on the way thay are brought up.

WHY EXERCISE?

Some people exercise regularly, but many do not, especially those who are busy in their careers or in their professions that they find no time for exercise.  If those who don’t exercise knew how important it is, probably they would all start exercise programs.  What does regular exercise can do? Regular exercise makes and keeps you fit. In fact it helps you look and feel fit in addition to being fit.

          Exercise and be Healthy…In the first place, regular exercise is good for your health. What are some of the helpful exercises? The best exercise is walking… Walking is a good exercise, it keeps the form fit. It puts into play, painlessly and unconsciously, important body muscles. Walk vigorously and enthusiastically you can almost actually feel the blood circulating in your body.

Another is bicycling; Cycling is one of the easiest ways to exercise. You can ride a bicycle almost anywhere, at any time of the year, and without spending a fortune. Many people are put off doing certain sports because of the high level of skill that seems to be required, or perhaps because they can’t commit to a team sport due to time pressures. Most of us know how to cycle and once you have learned you don’t forget. All you need is a bike, a half an hour here or there when it suits, and a bit of confidence. It also builds strengths and muscle tone, builds stamina, improves cardiovascular fitness, eats up calories, improves heart health, improves coordination and reduces stress.

Also, doing aerobic activity regularly is quite helpful. Your heart becomes stronger, and your breathing improves. These physical changes increase your endurance. You actually have more energy. Also muscles that are working burn more fat calories.

          Exercise helps improve not only your health but also your looks. Because your body burns more calories, you lose weight and look slimmer and trimmer. Your muscles become firm. You seem more youthful and energetic. In addition, better circulation gives your skin and hair healthy glow. All these physical benefits lead to perhaps the most important result of regular exercise. It makes you feel better. Exercise reduces tension in your muscles and makes you more relaxed. You feel rested and ready to go during the day, and you sleep better at night. Because you look better, you feel better about your body and about yourself. Your confidence would increase.

Some enthusiasts have it that a good habitual exercise could make you also a good habitual thinker. Clear thinking may come as a result of good blood circulation and generally body health through exercise.

Now, with all the benefits of regular exercise, for sure you will find time to exercise no matter how busy you are. Exercise regularly and live life healthy and happily!

NO TO MINING IN BICOL

                 Mining, in its broadest sense, the process of obtaining useful minerals from the earth’s crust. The process includes excavations in underground mines and surface excavations in open-pit, or opencut (strip) mines. In addition, recent technological developments may soon make economically feasible the mining of metallic ores from the seafloor. Mining normally means an operation that involves the physical removal of rock and earth. A number of substances, notably natural gas, petroleum, and some sulfur, are produced by methods (primarily drilling) that are not classified as mining.

          To use these minerals, mining is indispensable. In today’s high demands of the modern technologies, these minerals are necessary for its operation. Countries with rich deposit of minerals, like Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East became rich, powerful and famous.

But mining at all times is not advantageous. Mining, according to some environmentalist is killing the earth slowly. Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes challenged government officials who advocate mining to live in areas ravaged by mining so they would have a taste of the sufferings of the poor as he warned government officials that the wrath of the people would be upon them if they insist on pursuing activities that would destroy the environment like mining and geothermal exploration.

            According to Bishop Bastes, mining and geothermal exploration are both destructive of the environment which eventually ravages the people especially the poor who have no other choice but to stay in their localities. Yes, its true, people who are most affected are the poor. Precisely, the rich will not be affected. In fact, the capitalists, the lords of the mining are the rich and mining will make them richer. The sad fact is, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the very government agency who is expected to protect our nature, the Mother Earth, is issuing permit to these mining operators to operate mining activities.

              It is an accepted fact that mining can help uplift our nation’s economy. If we will explore our land, our forest and our sea bed, we will find that our country is rich with mineral deposits. But look at the Banawe Rice Terraces of our Ifugao People. This terraces which is one of the world’s wonder is already near its destruction. One of the causes is said to be the excavations made by small miners. These causes soil erosion that deformed the rice terraces.

                But environmentalists like Bishop Bastes whose heart belongs to the poor will not just sit-down and wait for the disasters brought by mining kill thousands of people and destruct the environment which is the very source of living of the ordinary and poor residents. He expressed his strong support to the anti-mining groups who filed a case against DENR and local officials relative to the mining activities in the town of Matnog. He also sounded the alarm against the planned geothermal explorations around Bulusan Volcano, an active volcano in the province of Sorsogon.

               The effects of environmental degradation are now very evident with the floods that struck many provinces in the north and elsewhere in the country. The soil erosion that happened in Mount Asog of Iriga City, just this year had been suspected to be caused by quarrying. The quarrying in Buhi was already stopped because of the danger that the mountain will collapsed if they will continue to quarry the decorative stones that holds the mountain soil. These and other activities similar to mining are detrimental to our environment and to our lives. Let us not wait for the Ormoc Tragedy to happen to us, and worst, the tragedy that happened in Albay during Typhoon Reming. Let us not gamble our life for the benefit we will get from mining. As what Bishop Bastes said, “Only the poor who are at the disadvantage when this happens while the officials and those who profited from mining are in the comforts of their mansions.”

The Wedding

         When a young lady or a young bachelor agreed to live together and start a family, their commitment will be sealed in a ritual or ceremony called wedding. This is far different from the earliest weddings of our ancestors. Our primitive ancestors came together for protection and survival rather than meaningful relationships. Since there was safety in numbers, primitive people formed tribes to which they were very loyal. It is believed that the first marriages may have actually been group weddings - marriage to the tribe.

   Until such time that men and women came together in couples, and formed individual families. But marriage wasn't always a happy event. Due to tribal rivalry, women and children were often captured or stolen. Since many tribes had rules forbidding intermarriage within a clan, women were kidnapped and forced to marry the strangers who captured them. This period in history is called the "marriage by capture" era.

Little by little, as time evolves, wedding became a sacred commitmment between a man and woman who wished to form a family. Wedding legalized the couples living together and recognized them as husband and wife. Under the law, children of married couples are called legitimate children and children outside marriage are called illigitimate children whether they are acknowlegded or not by their biological father.

Wedding ceremony can be performed by civil authorities just like a judge or by church authorities like priests, pastors or church ministers. Both are legal and is recognized by the society. Church wedding ceremony is performed according to the teaching of the church, but, they used almost the same wedding symbols.

Wedding Rings

All wedding, wether civil wedding or church wedding uses ring as a wedding symbol. The wedding ring is the most ancient of all marriage traditions. Nearly every civilization since the Egyptians has used the wedding ring as a symbol of the marriage agreement. In Egyptian hieroglyphics, the circle represents eternity, and the earliest rings were made of braided grass, hay, leather, bone and ivory. When metals were eventually discovered, the first metal rings were lumpy and awkward. Today, wedding rings can be anything from an inexpensive, plain band to an intricate setting studded with gems.

In most civil wedding, bride do not wear bridal  gown but not in church weddings. Wedding gowns have not always been elaborate, as many are today. In the eighteenth century, poor brides dressed in simple robes. This symbolized to her future husband that she brought nothing with her into the marriage and would therefore not burden him with any debt. It wasn't until the mid nineteenth century that the all-white wedding dress became fashionable. Up until then a bride simply wore her best dress, regardless of its color. In 1840, Queen Victoria's pure white gown started the trend that many women follow today.

Bride's bouquet of flowers

  Bridal bouquet complete the looks of the bride. Before the use of flowers in the bridal bouquet, women carried aromatic bunches of garlic, herbs, and grains to drive evil spirits away as they walked down the aisle. Over time, these were replaced with flowers, symbolizing fertility and everlasting love. Specific flowers have special meanings in many cultures. In Hawaii, the bride and groom wear leis; newlyweds in India use floral headdresses.

Bride's Veil

           Another symbol used in church weddings is veil. Veils were originally worn by unmarried women to show modesty. In early weddings, men bargained for wives with the woman's father. At the wedding ceremony, a bride wore the veil as a symbol of submissiveness and a promise to obey her new husband. Only after the ceremony was the veil lifted to reveal the bride's appearance to the groom. Sometime in the sixteenth century, headdresses with delicate veils became fashionable; lace veils became popular after Queen Victoria's wedding in 1840.

Wedding Cake

                Wedding cakes have been a part of marriage ceremonies since medieval times. In Rome, the first wedding cakes were actually loaves of wheat bread. During the ceremony, the bread was broken over the bride's head as a blessing for long life and many children. Guests often ate the crumbs as a sign of good luck.Overtime, it became traditional to stack several cakes atop one another, as tall as possible. The bride and groom would then be charged to kiss over this tower without knocking it over. If they weresuccessful, a lifetime of good fortune was certain for the new couple. Finally, during the reign of King Charles II of England, it became customary for cake to be a palatable palace iced with sugar.Today, wedding cake comes in diffrent design, sizes and colors. Before, wedding cake was always white inside and out.

Wedding Cord

               Another wedding symbol is the wedding cord. Others use cloth rope while some prefered flower cord.

             Wedding ceremony is followed by the banquet or the wedding party. In the Philppines before, wedding guests gathered at the bride’s house for the banquet which is hosted by the groom’s family. They usually come a day before to cook and prepare the place for the big occassion. Today, most of the couples preferred to bring their guests in hotels, resturants or reception halls for the wedding party.

THE BIRD I LOVE

One of my favorite birds is swan. This is the one I love most. Just merely observing them, listening to their sounds makes me feel relax. I like taming them and playing with them. I love carrying them in my arms, though sometimes their sharp beak hurts my arms. I love combing their feathers with my fingers. I remember when I was nine years old and my father had given me a pair of young white swan, a male and a female from a distant relative. I literally stolen an old, big basin from my grandparents house and make it a little pool for my pet. I usually slept in our abaca cradle during lunch break, now, no longer alone but with one of my pets while the other will be sleeping under the cradle. When the female started laying eggs, I was so happy. My two swans will become many. But, this does not happen. After laying five eggs, the female swan died. According to my father, it was bitten by a snake. I was so sad I cried for its death.

Swan is a large water bird that belongs to the family Anatidaetogether with geese and ducks. Swans are larger than geese and ducks, and they are easily recognized by their very long necks. Some swans arch their necks in a graceful curve, while others carry their necks upright. Most swans have pure white feathers, but two species that live in the southern hemisphere are completely or partially black. Male and female adult swans look alike. The male swan is called a cob, the female is a pen, and baby swans are cygnets.

           Swans are the largest waterfowl. The largest swan in the world is the trumpeter swan of North America. It measures as long as 1.8 m (72 in), has a wingspan as great as 2.5 m (8.2 ft), and weighs up to 16 kg (35 lbs). The smallest swan is the coscoroba swan of South America, though it is hardly a small bird, measuring about 1 m (40 in) in length. Some experts believe this bird is more closely related to geese.

           Many swans have loud, boisterous calls. The trumpeter swan, for example, is named for its bugle-like call, which carries a long distance. The whistling swan (known in North America as the tundra swan) has a whistle-like call. The coscoroba swan produces a loud call that sounds like “cos-cor-ooo.” The mute swan is an exception, although it is not entirely silent as the name implies. However, it is far quieter than other swans.

           Swans spend much of their time swimming in ponds, lakes, coastal bays, and rivers, and they are noted for their graceful movement. But, domesticated swan can be trained living longer on land rather on water. Our house is far from any body of water. I just made an improvised pond out of an old large basin which served as pool for my pet swans. Although they fly well, they need a large stretch of water for takeoff. To become airborne, swans patter along the top of the water, flapping their wings, until they gain sufficient speed for takeoff..

         Swans feed both in water and on land, and their diet consists mainly of plants. Their long necks enable them to feed underwater without diving. They reach underwater and pull up stems, leaves, and roots with their large bills. The young sometimes eat insects and small water invertebrates. The necks and faces of white swans may become stained as the result of iron or other minerals in the water they feed in. But my pet swans instead are feed with palay, corn and other grains. I am also giving them left-over rice. They are healthy, in fact left-over rice is their favorite.

               There are three species of swan I know, the trumpeter swan, the mute swan, and the tundra swan. The largest swan in the world is the trumpeter swan. This pure white swan has a black bill. Its neck is nearly twice as long as its body, helping the swan produces its loud, resonant trumpeting call. Trumpeters attack intruders, including dogs and children.

The tundra swan is the North American variant of the whistling swan, named for the whistling sound it makes. This all-white swan with a black bill resembles the trumpeter swan, although it is smaller than the trumpeter. 

              The mute swan also has pure white feathers. Its orange bill has a black knob at the base. The swan is native to Asia but today is commonly found in lakes in urban parks. It is the tamest of the swans and the least fearful near human habitation. This specie is also my favorite. I have four mute swan in my back yard. One male, a four year old Kintaro, his name; and three females.Kakita is four year old; Lara, six months old and Precious, the sister of Lara, also six months old.

My first pets were trumpeter. But according to my father, these were products of cross-breed between tundra and trumpeter that’s why they were no longer very big.

MY FIRST TRIP TO MANILA

Manila. A famous, controversial place I had never been before until I was twenty years old. My sister was married to a foreigner and was staying in London for quite sometimes. Until one summer she decided to buy a house in Manila, in one of the most expensive subdivisions in Las Piñas.

There was no mobile phone yet, way back 1980s. The only means of communication available that time is either through telegram or long distance call via land line telephone you will rent.

One afternoon, our landlady handed me a telegram. I was in third year college that time and was renting a room near to the university I was studying. It was a telegram from my sister requesting me to call her in the telephone number also indicated in the telegram. After changing my school uniform, I went to PT&T and made a long distance call. My sister is requesting me to go to Manila to bring some important documents she urgently needs.

I felt so excited I cannot sleep that night. I am trying to picture out Manila. The famous places I want to visit. Places I only watch from televisions. According to my sister I will stay for one week since it’ssemestral vacation. So, I want to go to malls, movie houses, to Luneta and Nayong Pilipino.    

I took a night trip. I felt both nervous and excited while riding the bus. Though my sister had given me complete instruction, I cannot help getting nervous. What if the bus took other route? What if while I was in the comfort room the bus leave and I was left? What if the bus had an engine trouble and did not reach the terminal the time it is expected to arrive and my sister had left already? All of these are clouds in my mind that trigger my fear of being lost in Manila. According to some folks who had been in Manila, this city is very big withtall buildings and jeepneys, taxi cabs and buses and people are all around night and day. I did never sleep during my trip.

When finally the bus stopped in Pasay, I took my bag and embrace it. I remember my mother’s caution of snatchers and pick pocketers in the terminal. My eyes inspected every face in the waiting area looking for my sister. But, she was not there. Passengers gone one by one until only three were left, I was one of them. Fear started striking me. My sister  was expecting the bus will arrive as early as 5:00 in the morning, but the bus arrived at 8:00. Did my sister went home already thinking that I changed my mind and no longer coming today?

“Neneng, good you’re now here. I was here in the terminal since 5:00 in the morning. Let’s go.” It’s my sister who just went out from the comfort room.

The subdivision is almost one hour ride from the Pasay Terminal. I was amazed by the tall and big houses along the way. My sister’s new bought house is the fifth from the third row, a three-storey building with wide lawn planted with green carabao grass and flowering plants. Too big for two persons. My sister was not blessed with a child.

I rested the whole morning. In the afternoon we went to Baclaran Church and attended a mass. I was expecting that the church is full with mass goers, but I was wrong. Only half of the church is occupied. According to my sister, the church is full of church goers only when it is Wednesday and Sunday.

The next day was a busy day. My brother-in-law has to meet foreign businessmen in Cubao. I will be joining them. I learned that they are planning to open a business with some of his friends here in Manila and this morning they will visit a prospect site of the business which is in Cubao.

Big business establishments are found in Cubao, much bigger and taller buildings than those in provinces and even in Las Piñas. It is such a busy city. Traffic is also terrible; vehicles both private and public abound everywhere. People are busy. They walk faster than those in provinces who walk lazily. They are well dressed, a manifestation of abundance. But there are also beggars and street children I saw. This is a place where people from all walks of life met. The richest among the rich and the poorest among the poor.

Our lunch was fabulous. Shangrila Hotel and Restaurant serves the best cuisine in the whole of Manila. Fantastic foods were served to us. Foods I never tasted my life. First time I ate in such a cold and classy restaurant.

We visited Luneta late in the afternoon that same day and Nayong Pilipino and Manila Zoo the next day. What a wonderful experienced I had. Stories I want to tell my other siblings when I return home. I am sure they will be amazed.

I had been in Baclaran already when we attended a mass during my first day in Manila. So, when we visited a relative residing there, I was so confident I know the place and will not be lost. While they were having some sort of “komustahan”, I asked permission from my sister to go to church. My sister asked me if I am sure I will not be lost and will be able to come back. I confidently answered yes, I will not be lost and will be able to find my way back. Anyway, it was only 2:00 in the afternoon.

After a minute of prayer in the church, I decided to explore the market. I started to walk and enjoy buying some stuff believing that they are much cheaper here than in the malls. It was almost 4:00 in the afternoon when I decided to go back to my cousin’s house which is just at the back of the church. Late to realize that I have gone far already. I cannot decide which way to go. I was lost. I keep on walking and walking but not sure of the direction I am heading for. I begun to tremble, it’s almost 6:00 and it’s becoming dark. I begun to cry when I saw a woman staring at me. “Ineng, are you lost?” she asked.

“Yes, Manang. Can you please show me the way to the church?”

She sighed and smiled. “Ineng, there is the church. Few meters from here.”

I followed the direction she pointed. To my surprise, I was almost there. The church is just several steps from where I am standing. I saw my cousin, my sister and my brother-in-law standing beside the closed gate of the church with worried faces. I run, embraced my sister and cried. Never will I dare to go alone in this busy and big city of Manila. Never again.

Many people are eager to know the result of the charges filled to the past administration.Due to her leadership in our country that's why speculations and opinions of the people are rampant based on what they observe in the process of investigation.Some have reacted violently and some are just being neutral about the issue.Media help in exposing the real process and events happened as the process are being done by the authorities.And it also adds spark to the issue which may lead to both groups that are concerned in the issue. Misunderstanding and misinterpretation to the comments of both camps were not avoided during the case filled which lead to another case being filled by the two groups with each other. Instead of adding another case file to each other why don't they just let the authorities do their job and let justice be served if the past administration have done something against to its citizens to stop the gossips and the use of media to make the issue big.Both groups should be responsible enough to their actions and to the words they say...
